Your house gets hot water through the stored hot water tank, it also supplies heat to the central heating radiators. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. You will most likely find the expansion tank kept in the highest part of the house. The hot water tank has two main functions; to heat the house and and provide hot water for washing.

Older homes generally have pumped/vented Central Heating systems.

The sealed Central Heating system is one that more and more people are opting for these days. As the name suggests, sealed system is a closed system; no tank is required in this system. There are benefits to have this closed type of system with pipework and tanks being unnecessary.

- No risk of freezing pipes in the attic.

- As opposed to pumped/vented systems there is no need for maintenance work on tanks or pipes.

- Reduces the risk of leaking.

- The air cannot enter the system as its sealed and hence there are lesser chances of sludge, corrosion and air locks developing.

- The main water pressure can easily be used to flush out a Sealed system for easy upkeep.

All the required controls and safety devices are incorporated into the sealed Gas Central Heating systems. The water for a sealed Central Heating System is supplied direct from the main water supply. It is plumbed straight into the main water supply.

Pressure variation can be regulated by a pressure vessel holding compressed gas; the hot water is pressurized by a diaphragm which also separates the water from the compressed gas. The safety valve opens up when the pressure in the system rises so that water can escape through it, on the other hand it opens up when the pressure drops down so that the water can refill the system.

As compared to other heating systems, Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
